Dollar Store DIY Project--Making Colorful Votives

To contact us Click HERE
Dipped Votive DIY Project at Nest of Posies
Kellie from Nest of Posies made these great Dollar Store Dipped Votive Candles and I wanted to share her wonderful work with you. Visit her site to get the exact directions (I promise you, they are NOT hard!) And these dipped Dollar Store votive candles are perfect for tabletops for picnic or backyard wedding receptions, rehearsal dinners and post wedding parties.
Bright colors make tabletops pop no matter how casual or formal your wedding is. Add them to the tops of outdoor wedding tables, but be sure to group them together to get the 'color block' look.
I admit, I fell in love with this project! Obviously you could make the pot shown yourself as well, some colorful rick rack added to a painted pot, then add some bright colored flowers! Simple!
Dipped Votive DIY Project at Nest of Posies
The hardest part of these do it yourself projects? Choosing the colors! There are so many great paint colors to choose from!
Having an indoor wedding come winter time? Try metallic and jewel tone colors!
So head over to Nest of Posies and get ready for a nice long visit, so many great ideas, so little time! But it's well worth it to take some time to browse through all Kellie's great work!

DIY Pretty Feet For Brides and Bridesmaids from The Dollar Store

Photo and tutorial link at Andrea's Bow Cottage
It's time for another dollar store DIY project. First let me say while previous Dollar Store projects have been EEEBCDI(**Easy Enough Even Bill Can Do It) this is NOT!
Maybe it's just that braiding skills aren't something most men grow up learning how to do or maybe it's just decorating with ribbons, but he had a tough time with this (or at least the final product is NOT one you'd want to wear, although kudos to him for his valiant attempt! Thanks Bill!)
The whole tutorial is on Andrea's Bow Cottage where you'll find still more photos and a complete tutorial so you can make some of these cute flip flops for your bridesmaids (or you can make them together as a group) so everyone has comfortable footwear for dancing. Andrea used flip flops from her local Dollar Store to make these pretty braided flip flops.
Face it, those five inch heels look pretty, but not many of us want our toes squashed for an long, long wedding day! So get a pretty pedicure with some pretty polish and wear these flip flops with flair!

Close up photo and tutorial link at Andrea's Bow Cottage

**EEEBCDI stands for DIY projects that are "Easy Enough Even Bill Can Do It" This lets brides know that even if they are DIY impaired, or if they want to grab their groom and get some help, these projects are good choices. My husband who is NOT craft-oriented has tested any project listed as EEEBCDI so there's no second guessing about how tough the project is. He has lots of great skills but he is NOT into crafts of any kind (unless he gets to play with the electricity or plumbing, for some reason he CAN do that!)

Short on Cash, Long on Love Dollar Store DIY Project

How can you take a few sheets of scrapbook paper, some skewers from your kitchen and toss them in an old glass bottle for a wedding centerpiece? Easy!
Yes, this is another Dollar Store **EEEBCDI craft for brides looking for an inexpensive DIY centerpiece or even the new apartment owner who is short on cash, long on love!
If you can draw some hearts freehand (or if you are totally non-artistic find some hearts to trace) onto some scrapbook paper and cut them out you can make this project. Choose a black, white and tan look like the one above or use hot colors or pastels to coordinate with your wedding.
Fizzy Lizzy Soda sold at Whole Foods
Use a black ink felt tip pen or cartridge pen to write an appropriately loving sentiment on one or two of the hearts a la "conversation hearts."
Tape the hearts back to back with the skewer in the center (Love double sided tape for this project) and then glue a small button in the center.
Toss a combination of hearts in a glass bottle. We went to Whole Foods and bought some bottles of Joe Tea Half and Half. (Oh and you have to be able to drink the contents of the bottle or dump it down the drain) and tie a piece of twine around the top.
You can also use any other glass bottle from soda or juice, just find one that is relatively tall. Whole Foods sells Fizzy Lizzy, these bottles are slimmer and taller than Joe Tea  bottles are, it all depends on your choice of shapes.
Joe Tea Half and Half sold at Whole Foods
How easy is that! The hardest part was choosing the scrapbook paper designs and colors and deciding which flavor of Joe Tea I wanted to drink so I'd have an empty bottle! Oh, and getting out of Whole Foods without stopping in the Bakery Department and buying some chocolate chip cookies!

**What's EEBCDI? This acronym stands for "Easy Enough Even Bill Can Do It." Bill is my patient husband who tries out a lot of my craft projects to see just how crazy they would make the basic bride who isn't long on craft skills but who wants to put some personal 'touches' into her wedding. Yes, if Bill can do it, I can do it, and you can too!

Leather Cuffs For Your Bridesmaids

Photo from Crap I've Made...sometimes it's amazing and sometimes it's just crap...
Char at Crap I've Made... has a great tutorial on how to make these upscale edgy leather cuffs that make great bridesmaid gifts or great jewelry for the bride who wants to add an urban edge to her wedding day.
I've done posts on Dollar Store DIY projects, but I may need to start considering doing some from Claire's. That's where Char got some of the bling on these leather cuffs. She has some other sources listed on her site too!
Hobby Lobby or the Leather Store is the source for the leather strap for the cuff. Char has several ways to dye the leather depending on the color you are looking to achieve. I can't decide whether I like the blinged out versions or the ones with the roses...hmmm..what do you think?
Photo from Crap I've Made...sometimes it's amazing and sometimes it's just crap...
Char said she got the idea while visiting the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft where she saw similar cuffs being sold for $130! Wow! These are much more cost concious, but if you don't feel like going the craft route you can probably contact the museum to buy one of the upscale cuffs.
She recommends Hobby Lobby as a great source for your leather making goods like the leather cuff and the leather string and dye, so if you aren't an experienced leather worker who has their own source you know where to go. I suspect your local craft store might also carry some of the items you need.
The bling came from Claire's (that mall store filled with cheap and occasionally tacky jewelry) but any of those teen clothing stores probably carry something that would work. Char used some of those stretchy rings that you see everywhere that were on clearance.
So head out to get your leather cuff and bling and get to work creating works of art for your bridesmaids or for you to wear at your wedding. For a complete tutorial visit Crap I've Made...sometimes it's amazing and sometimes it's just crap...

Barn Wedding Decor Ideas

To contact us Click HERE
Are you one of the many brides who loves the idea of a barn wedding? Are you on the hunt for unique barn wedding decor ideas? Here are a few that are certain to make your barn wedding a stand out event!
The barn wedding trend looks like it’s got staying power and will definitely be hotter than ever in 2012. In fact, barn wedding venues are cropping up all over the US and Canada, which is great news for couples pining for a shabby chic or rustic wedding.
There are many different styles of barn weddings, from all-out elegance to simple, vintage-styled, or country chic. Elegance with rustic elements are a popular wedding trend. Here are some DIY barn wedding decor ideas that will go a long way in creating an inviting space:

1. Light Strands – Use lots of them!  Market place lighting, as they are often called, are small bulbs of light, similar in size to a golf ball, and will help to create instant ambiance and make the barn radiant and enchanting. Barns generally don’t have the greatest lighting – but strands of lights hung about your dining area will make a huge impact. Buy them right after Christmas at a good price, but do not be tempted to buy the icicle lights... leave them for Christmas decor, not wedding decor!
2. Candles – Us them everywhere possible. They are affordable, and again, lighting is the single most important decor element when creating mood, ambiance and a wedding to remember. Check with your venue, to make sure all flame is safely inside a hurricane or container! Again, this will help to light up your space and add a romantic glow. Just be mindful that your barn wedding venue is made of wood! Use open flames with caution.

3. Burlap – Burlap table runners look great at a barn wedding – and burlap is an excellent choice for brides on a budget. Burlap can be used in a multitude of ways including, wedding invitations, bouquet wraps, buntings, chuppah drapes, altar coverings and more.

4. Buntings – Buntings are a great way to add colors and patterns to an earthy backdrop. Buntings or pennant garlands are a terrific DIY project that allows your personality and wedding day style shine! Pom pom garlands are also a great way to bring color to your event.

5. Chalkboards – Chalkboards are a great fit for barn weddings as menu boards or even seating charts. You can make your own chalkboard signs with using Masonite from your local hardware store.
6. Glass – Bottles in various colors and shapes make for superb barn wedding centerpieces. Large and small sizes and a combination of colors and shapes including old medicine bottles, perfume and chemistry bottles, are wonderful when filled with small flowers. You might try to suspend them with string from the ceiling.

7. Tins -Vintage tin cans, and old galvanized watering cans add a rustic vibe to your table decor.

8. Ribbon- Ribbon will add pops of color to the earthy, rustic tones inside a barn. The soft, flowing quality of ribbon fits in nicely in a barn setting.

9. Drapery – Drapery can be hung from the ceiling or at the entrance way.

10. Chandelier - A chandelier adds instant elegance to a space and is one of the most transformative barn wedding elements. The contrast of such beautiful elegance in a rustic setting works each and every time!
11. Books- Raid your home library and supplement with vintage books from your local thrift store. When combined with tins, flowers, bottles, chalkboards, and other decor elements, you can create small "vinettes" for each table, creating a unique table centerpiece that is unforgettable.

My Vera Wang - Organza Fit and Flare Gown with Bias Flange Skirt

To contact us Click HERE
When I first saw this dress online I knew it was the one for me! I mistakenly tried it on first and didn't have the "love" "say yes to the dress" feeling. But after trying on many other dresses I knew it really was the one for me!

I have always been in LOVE with Vera Wang but I could never see myself spending Vera's prices on a wedding dress unless I was marrying Richard Branson. So when Vera Wang came out with the White Collection for David's Bridal I was there trying on dresses the debut weekend.
I love love love this dress but it comes with a straight neckline which I changed to be a sweetheart. I am so glad I did because the dress became so much more me and much more romantic. I recommend trying to find a good reasonable seamstress. I ended up paying $150 for the hem, bustle, and sweetheart alteration. The hem and bustle alone would have been $150 at David's Bridal and also DB dose not change the design of any of the wedding dresses they sell there, so I would have had to go to another shop for the sweetheart. I went to http://marialisabridal.com/ in West Roxbury. I live in Boston so it was about a 20 min. drive but Maria Lisa did a wonderful job!
I got married at the MIT Chapel in Cambridge MA by the famous architect Eero Saainen. If you have ever been in there you would know that the wall gently wave toward the alter. I love that my wedding dress resembled those waves of the chapels walls.
I think my dress was perfect for my soft romantic wedding theme and it made me feel beautiful, which is the most important part!

Wedding Frame Prop
For my wedding I thought it would be super cute to have alarge wedding frame for everyone to take photos behind. Of course the easiestway would have been to hang the frame but my venue didn’t allow you to hanganything! So I came up with this design and one of my best friends and herhusband made this amazing frame for me! This project was such a cute elementfor my wedding and created an opportunity for super cute pictures.

Tip - Buy crown molding for the frame. It can be much cheaper than buying such a large frame. One stop at Home Depot and your set!
A big thanks to Kristin and Mike…..Love you guys!!! xoxoxox

DIY Dollar Store Centerpiece - Fast and Easy!

DIY project by Martha Stewart, reposted on Afloral
The Dollar Store strikes again! (as does Martha Stewart's creative team!) How great looking are these centerpieces made from vases from The Dollar Store, a single large bloom for each vase, and a votive candle?  Just wire or tie the bloom on the outside of a tall glass vase found at your local Dollar Store (OK this is super easy! Anyone can shop!) Then add a votive candle to the center of the vase. Set it on a square base to protect your table from direct heat from the candle and voila! (Oh and it helps to have either long matches or a long Bic lighter to make lighting those votives fast and easy!)
This is a DIY project that is EEEBCDI!( Easy Enough Even Bill Can Do It). Bill is my husband who tests my DIY projects to see just how easy they REALLY are. He's a man more comfortable with his circular saw than a hot glue gun, flowers and candles, but even he pronounced this craft 'easy' and he really liked the price point! So even if you aren't the 'crafty type' these centerpieces are simple and quick to put together. You'll spend the most time choosing your flowers and getting to the store!
Not only does this make a great centerpiece for your wedding or shower, but if you are having pre- or post-wedding parties at your home, maybe barbecuing in your back yard, these vases act as hurricanes, keeping your candles lit even on the breeziest days!
So if you are looking for an easy and fast DIY wedding project that anyone can do, try this simple Dollar Store craft idea courtesy of Martha Stewart and her creative team.

Our DIY December Barn Wedding + Top 10 Wedding Tips

To contact us Click HERE

Hello, folks! Finally, the long-awaited wedding deets. First, I will say that I could probably write a book about the process of DIY-ing a wedding (because of how many details there are, not because I am an expert), so I'm going to do my VERY best to be concise when summing everything up. There were so many hours put in to planning, researching and dreaming before we ever got to the doing part. I was completely and totally guilty of wedding brain (when everything you do, say, think, write is done so in the context of something wedding-related. Sorry to any of my co-workers who fell victim to wedding brain).

First-off, let me say that until I had planned my own wedding, I had no idea how many details there were to be considered. I will have a whole new appreciation at the next wedding I attend.

Second, let me also say that it was my goal to spend as little money as possible. This made it interesting, challenging and a little more fun.

Third, as many people also want, I wanted our wedding to be unique. I wanted every detail to say "us." I wanted people to see everything and say, "wow--this so fits who you guys are as people and who you've become as a couple!" This also provided many opportunities to think outside of the box!

Finally, we never bought anything from a wedding web site or vendor. Time and time again, I would see products selling for double the price just because it had "wedding" in the name or description. For example, we had a sparkler send-off. When researching prices, I compared prices on one wedding web site to the non-wedding web site I ended up choosing. Because I chose regular, you'd-buy-them-for-4th-of-July sparklers, I paid less than half of what I would have paid for "wedding sparklers." And the kicker? They looked exactly the same!

So, before I get to my lists of vendors, budgets and DIY projects, let's look at some pictures! (My favorite part.)

Sigh...yes, Jackie IS marvelous. And brilliant. And amazing to work with. She also did our engagement photos that so many of you loved. (And if you missed our wedding video by Brickhouse, check it out here!)

I'm going to do my best to break things down (we're already 2.5 months post-wedding and my frazzled brain is healing without trying to remember all of the wedding planning details!), but if you have any questions, please ask!

Things we DIY-ed
(future posts coming to detail most of these!)

  • My mom and I designed and hand-made our wedding invitations
  • I designed and printed our programs and the sparkler holders
  • We designed and built our cupcake stand from trees downed after a storm (so, it was free!)
  • I made and hand-painted all banners and props used in photos and decorating
  • I sewed the flower girl dresses and ringbearer pillow
  • I handmade the paper flower pomanders for the flower girls to carry
  • I made faux craspedia for the bridesmaid bouquets/boutonnieres and then put together all of the bouquets/boutonnieres a couple of days before the wedding with fresh flowers--even my bouquet!
  • In lieu of a traditional guest book, I designed comment cards for guests to leave us comments, marriage advice, etc.
  • We built an "I Do's" sign to direct people around the barn
  • I collected Goodwill and dollar store frames, spray-painted them white and designed a timeline photo table to illustrate all of the times we'd been in the same places with the same people and somehow never met!
  • My mom and I made twine globes and hung them over the candy table with yellow and gray patterned paper lanterns from a large branch
  • I overhauled a thrift store suitcase to create a place for guests to drop their cards.

  • Cupcakes, drinks and cups/utensils: Sam's Club
  • Yellow plates and napkins: The Dollar Tree
  • Mason jar drink dispensers, yellow parasol and yellow paper lanterns (hanging above the candy table): World Market
  • Glassware on candy table: mostly thrifted, but I did pick up a couple of items from HomeGoods and Target!
  • Pepsi crate on candy table: Bondie's Old Town Antique Mall, a local antique shop
  • Cake topper and pearls necklace/earrings I wore: the cake topper topped my grandparents wedding cake and the pearls were a gift to my mom from my late great-grandmother. These details made the day that much sweeter!
I'm sure there were other little things here and there that I'm forgetting (mostly just gathering supplies for the DIY projects), so if you see something that I haven't mentioned, please ask!
Budget & Top 10 Wedding Tips
At the beginning, I was doing a great job of tracking expenses and trying to be careful to be as frugal as possible as we thought of more items that needed to be bought and included (if we even decided we really needed them). We decided to forgo a meal, as the wedding was at 3:00 in the afternoon, which saved a lot of money. As things got more hectic and stressful right before the wedding, I stopped tracking every little expense for the sake of getting things done. All in all, though, I estimate we spent between $5,500 and $6,000, with the help of our parents. If you're like me, you're thinking that's a good chunk of change. But, friends, I know with all of my heart that we saved SO much money. Here are my tips:
  1. Think about getting married in the off-season; by having a December wedding, we got our location for half-price, simply because it was their off-season.
  2. To second my note above, stay away from anything labeled "wedding" just for the sake of being labeled. I saw so many prices doubled just because they had "wedding" in the name!
  3. Think ordinary; our cupcakes were bought in bulk from Sam's. We heard (I didn't have time to stop and eat one!) that they were awesome. They also looked pretty because my mom insisted that we cut out cupcake wrappers and top them with a monogram.
  4. Do it yourself; you can see for yourself the list of items we made ourselves above. By simply spending the time creating the things we wanted, we cut out all of the expenses we would have incurred in paying someone. For the items we didn't have time to make, we tried to use local businesses and Etsy shops. What you'll end up with is something totally unique and completely personalized.
  5. Cut down on fresh flowers; the only fresh flowers we bought were babies breath, ranunculus and a couple of bouquets of simple white flowers they already had in the store. If I could do it over again, I wouldn't even special-order the ranunculus. They were beautiful, but accounted for over half of our total flower cost ($120 total, if you're wondering), and they had so many beautiful white flowers I could have also used (which I did end up doing since the ranunculus were so small). I'll do a post on flowers later, but these are my initial thoughts!
  6. Do your research; we were able to buy $100 custom suits and all of the ties were under $15 (some were even $5!). That's less than renting a tux for each guy AND they all came out of the deal with a custom suits, folks! By doing your research to find the best price, you can feel confident in what you are buying.
  7. Shop on clearance and thrift your heart out; my shoes were bought on clearance, my dress came from a consignment shop, our mason jars came from thrift shops/Craiglist/friends, everthing (except the mason jar drinks dispensers) from World Market was on clearance, most of the glassware was thrifted...rarely did we buy something for full price, but if we did, we did our research first (see #6).
  8. Decide what's important and spend your money there; I've always said that pictures would be the most important for me. My feelings are that your big day are gone in such a flash that all you're left with is photos, memories and maybe even a video. So, photography took the biggest chunk of our budget, which was 1000% OK since we planned for it. From there, we were able to allocate the remaining money to everything else. It helped us to pare down and sort through the list of possible items to include. For example, we didn't have a DJ, so we set up a Spotify playlist on my Mac and had a friend in charge of making sure everything ran smoothly. F-R-E-E! (Thanks, Ben!)
  9. Let people help you; this one was hardest for me. Not because I wanted to control it, but because there were so many little things I was picturing, I had a hard time communicating and delegating it all. Probably the biggest help to me was when my mom came down for the weekend and sat me down to research and order things we needed (like the candy). I needed someone to make me focus on getting it done, rather than spending my time stressing about it. (Thanks, Mom!) We also made our twine lanterns (interrupted in the middle by an earthquake!) and I finished the flower girl dresses that weekend. Oh, and my Nana came up a day earlier and we took care of buying all of the paper goods. Not only was it a huge help to me having them there, but we also created some fun memories. So, have a girl's night with your friends or get together with your family and knock those projects out!
  10. Finally, know that your big day is going to go fast. By preparing myself for that, I remembered to stop at different times during the day and try to freeze that moment in my memory. I missed things, yes...I didn't get anything to eat or drink and I didn't see the kids eating candy or people enjoying the fires outside, but I do remember what my thoughts were when I woke up, I remember seeing my friend Krissy on the couch as I was leaving for my hair appointment, I remember the quiet time spent with my mom, Jackie and Kayla as I was getting my hair done, I remember the looks on the groomsmen faces during the ceremony, I remember the things my daddy whispered to me when we were dancing (he made me cry big time), I remember the hugs we got right after the ceremony, I remember seeing precious friends that live far away, I remember the moment we decided it was time to leave and I remember being on cloud 9 as we drove away. That day was truly the best day of my life and I'm still so elated as I sit here remembering.
So, that, my friends, in the best nutshell I can muster, is our DIY December barn wedding. Project details to come; get excited!
